Waste Less, Save More: Learn Food Waste Hacks at the Waikato Food Show

Did you know the average New Zealand household throws away hundreds of dollars' worth of food every year? With grocery bills continuing to rise, reducing food waste isn't just good for the environment, it's good for your wallet too.

That's why we're excited to be bringing two passionate food waste champions to this year's Waikato Food Show, thanks to Hamilton City Council Waste Minimisation Funding. Whether you're looking to save money, get more creative in the kitchen, or simply make your groceries go further, these sessions are packed with practical tips you can start using straight away.

Join Kate Fenwick from Waste-Ed with Kate in the How To Hub on Saturday at 1.00pm for her Food Lovers Masterclass.

Kate has built a reputation as one of New Zealand's leading waste minimisation educators, helping thousands of Kiwis reduce waste, save money and develop better habits at home. Her down-to-earth, practical and often hilarious approach makes sustainable living feel achievable for everyone.

In her masterclass, Kate will share simple ways to:

  • Store food properly so it lasts longer

  • Understand the difference between use-by and best-before dates

  • Get creative with leftovers

  • Reduce food waste without sacrificing flavour

  • Save money on your weekly grocery shop

Earlier on Saturday at 11.30am, celebrity chef Simon Gault will take the stage in the Heathcotes Cooking Theatre to show visitors how leftovers can become the star of the next meal.

In his demonstration, Mastering Risotto with Leftovers, Simon will share simple techniques for creating a creamy, flavour-packed risotto using ingredients you already have in your fridge. It's a delicious example of how reducing food waste doesn't mean compromising on taste.

Whether it's leftover roast vegetables, chicken, herbs or odds and ends from the week, Simon will show how everyday ingredients can be transformed into a restaurant-quality meal.

Food waste can often feel like an overwhelming issue, but Kate and Simon prove that small changes can have a big impact. Learning how to store food correctly, plan meals, use leftovers creatively and understand food labels can significantly reduce what ends up in the bin.
